  • I'm confused.

PR, you think Bush was "pretty straight up with what he wanted to do and how he was going to do it." Huh???

Also you said you liked Obama because he wouldnt jerk with the fourth amendment...protection illegal search and seizure. Umm, YOU VOTED FOR BUSH?!?!?! and u like the fourth amendment??
  • Black Republicans (especially Baby Boomers for some ODD reason) seem to shrinkwrap Affirmative Action into this black and white philosophy of "Those that Try" vs "Those that Don't". The issue isn't whether Obama worked hard or not. The issue is whether he would have even been ALLOWED into a school like Harvard Law without AA in place. I mean lets kick the ballistics here © Nino Brown. The admissions rate in the 70's and 80's for black in IVY league schools was WHOA. SMART OR NO-SMART. TRY or NO-TRY. Affirmative action does a lot more than GIVE people freebie. Even today in its abused nature. Does it need fixing ABSOLUTELY.
I don't consider myself Dem or Rep because I have an "in-between" stance on a lot of issues. Thats why I asked what sold you.
But I do think its interesting that a lot of lower to middle income people scream the Rep Party stick points as if they've somehow enhanced their true reality. eg. Blue collar white people chanting "Personal responsiblity". ala Joe the Plumber. "I don't believe in handouts! You're gonna take my money and give it to those lazy people (read into that however you like)". Its like JOE, YOU ARE THE LAZY PEOPLE. I make more money than you! lol.
I think that the disconnect in the logic that to be Poor ? "not hard working". Or my favorite... the more money you make = the harder you worked for it. Now THATS BS.
Also because a Republican jumps out first and says "We believe in the right to bear arms" should one deduce that Barry O/John Kerry etc etc wants to take your guns?
Or that Dems think we should have provisions for people in need that they think people shouldn't have to work (hard) for a living. Way to black n white for me.
    ^^
Last two paragraphs illustrate why I can't really lay down with either GANG. I tend to vote more democratic though because at least they seem to get that everyone thats broke didn't get that way from being a bum out for free goodies.
  • Obama's life and his success are a product of hard work, not affirmative action. I can't say for sure, but I don't think either of his parents or his grandparents benefited directly from that. I believe that hard work, dedication, network, and perserverence are the key elements to his particular success. Heavy on the networking. To say that his success is anything less is doing a real disservice to the strides he made and the struggles he overcame to achieve the unthinkable. We are better than that and I believe that more than ever.

Not to say that affirmative action or welfare prior to the 70s didn't have a place, I think today they are bastardized versions of their original intentions and it can be argue that they are in fact "handouts". Just like all this bailout bs is "handouts". If you don't get off your ass and work, then you shouldn't eat. If you work hard and make it happen, then you should. Life, liberty, and pursuit of property.

I voted for Obama the same reason why I voted for Bush, because he was pretty straight up with what he wanted to do and how he was going to do it. Plus Obama has made it very clear that he will protect this country, not mess with the 4th amendment, and try and rectify some of this craziness. Whether I agreed with him on all the issues or not, I think the majority of non Democrats who voted for Obama did it because they didn't believe in the Mccain/Palin ticket. They didn't have a real laid out agenda, weren't too set on their campaign, and the straight talk express lost some wheels trying to move far right. Its similar to the weakness of the Kerry/Edwards bill 4 yrs ago. Or Gore and Lieberman's fake ass.

I voted for the best candidate and the strongest ticket, not who I can lineup with on every issue.
  • Hmmm. I see. Well if your party points are important and your assessment of BillyBoy is accurate, then theres about four other people that deserved your vote over Obama.

PS. there's NO way you don't believe in affirmative action. You just voted for a guy whose life wouldn't have been possible without it. I have to believe you just don't believe in '08's new era "handout" stigma attached to it.
  • True..true...
  • Paulie...u sound more like a Libertarian...which is a where a lot of modern conservatives fall. Unless you go hard pro-life and anti-gay rights, you don;t sound that much like the GOP base.
  • Major reasons why I would have considered myself a Republican (although now I am leaning more toward being an independant now cause I have always been more moderate than hardline) is I don't believe in affirmative action, big government, or higher taxes. I also believe in individual liberty, personal economic responsibility for individual actions, the right to bear arms, and having a strong military. I also believe that PR should be a state, we should do more for immigrants and their rights, especially immigrants living illegally or who have children that were born here but are illegal. I think that as a president Bill Clinton did more harm to the black community than good and that the Democratic Party have been using the Civil Rights movement as a tool to keep minorities in the party, but not really had any real agenda to help low income communities progress economic, socially, or educationally.

As you saw in the primaries, until an outside force such as Obama came in and really shook the party to its core (and threaten to take the next 3 generations with it), the Democrats were just a good ol boy network fronting as the party for the people.
  • Indeed. I wanna know what it theology it is that makes Paul a Republican. Not that Democrats have a pot to piss in... but just wondering.
  • ^^^I cosign that!
